As a developing country, the waste management situation in Bangladesh is very alarming. It poses serious health threats to humans and nature, and thus it demands immediate and sustainable solutions. Hence few years back the government of Bangladesh has taken some extra measures on the traditional waste management system in big cities like Dhaka, Chattogram and other divisional districts. However, there are equal needs of waste management in rural areas, especially in villages, but these are still ignored due to financial constrains of the local government bodies.
Under this circumstances, Global Communication Center (GCC) of Grameen Communications initiated this GramClean project as a non-government pilot program focusing waste management of the villages of Bangladesh in 2015. The Bangla word “Gram” means village. The “GramClean” project aims to develop a sustainable model of village waste management system and thereby contributes for the development of minimum waste village. This project has been sponsored by different partner organizations in different time. Currently the project has been jointly sponsored by Three-S Corporation and MIJW-Dream Project from Mito to the World Association.
GramClean is an initiative under the GramHealth project of Global Communication Center (GCC). It endeavours to make villages to dispose minimum waste to the environment by managing the wastes properly. We aim to educate the notion of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) to the villagers so that all the waste generated inside the village can be processed entirely. The villagers are trained to segregate different kinds of wastes (such as plastics, glass, metal, colour polythene, white polythene, perishable items, etc.) and dispose them in proper manner. Plastic and metal wastes are preserved separately for reselling/recycling and perishable garbage (household wastes) are processed to make compost fertilizers.
